Many us call ourselves dog lovers & consider our dog to be our best friend, but there’s actually a lot we don’t know about them! Well, that’s why we’ve come up with a list of interesting facts about dogs that will help you understand your doggo better! After all, we’re here to support you on your journey to be the best pet parent to your pupper.

Even if you think you know everything there is to know about your dog, we’re sure some of these amazing facts about dogs will surprise you and make you go over to your dog for a quick cuddle!

  1. Time for the Dogter: A study at the Schillhohe Hospital in Germany found that dogs may be able to smell many organic compounds in the human body that show it isn’t functioning the way it should. Dogs have been known to detect various ailments in humans, from cancer to diabetes. They can even be trained to detect changes in the human body — there are even seizure alert dogs that assist patients during the onset of a seizure. There are also diabetic alert dogs who signal their human when they pick up on the special scent that is released when their human's insulin levels drop. If that isn’t amazing, we don’t know what is!

  2. Separation Anxiety is Real: Dogs have a sense of time and they miss you when you’re gone! It's been proven that they know the difference between an hour and five. If conditioned to, they can even predict future events, such as regular walk times. If you leave your dog a piece of clothing that smells like you when you leave them for a long period of time, the scent will comfort them and it can help curb their separation anxiety.

  3. Canine Jealousy: According to a study at the University of California, it was found that dogs can get jealous if they see their humans displaying affection toward something or someone else. So the next time you pet another dog, your pupper will know and will not be happy about it.

  4. Snuggle Circles: When they sleep, dogs curl up into themselves to form a ball for 2 reasons! Firstly, they look adorable and secondly it’s because of an instinct to protect themselves and to keep warm! Before curling up, they spin in a circle before settling down to snuggle because they’re making themselves at home! This is a nesting trait carried down from your dog's wilder ancestors.

  5. Happy Camper: Human blood pressure goes down when petting a dog. And so does your dog’s. Stroking them and gazing into their eyes releases the "feel good" hormone oxytocin for both people and dogs.

  6. Super Senses: Your dog’s senses are a lot more amplified than yours!  A dogs' sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than a human’s. They also don’t like rain because the amplified sound hurts their sensitive ears.

  7. Doggy Dreamland: Dogs dream just like us! Dogs & humans have the same type of and rapid eye movement (REM) cycles and during this REM stage dogs can dream. The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that your pet is dreaming. All dogs do dream, but puppies and senior dogs dream more frequently than adult dogs. Now, what your pupper dreams off is something we will probably never know!

  8. Dalmatian Delights: We hate to say it but Cruella De Ville was right! Dalmatian puppies are born completely white and their spots develop over time as they grow!

  9. Nose Boop: A dog’s nose is very special to them! They are always moist because they secrete a thin layer of mucous that helps them absorb a scent in the air. They then lick their noses to sample the scent through their mouth, allowing them to taste scents. A dogs noseprint is also unique, just like a human fingerprint! So now even your doggos have something individualistic about them!

  10. A Cheat Code into your Pupper’s Mind: Dogs demonstrate various things through their behaviour. They too have a range of complex thoughts and emotions. Licking shows that a dog is feeling submissive to someone who is dominant. According to experts, sitting on someone’s feet is a dogs way of claiming that person. Has your pupper claimed you yet?

  11. Dogs are Intelligent: Your dog is as smart as a two-year-old toddler. According to research, dogs can understand around 200 words. That’s why toddlers and their pet dogs get along so well, their range of communication is very similar!

  12. Smelltastic: A lot of the time your dog will roll around in something they like because they want to carry the smell of it with them wherever they go! If you find your pup rolling around in your clothes or rubbing against you, it could mean that they miss you and want to keep your smell with them.

  13. The World in Colour: It is a commonly believed myth that dogs only see in black and white. In fact, it’s believed that dogs see primarily in blue, greenish-yellow, yellow and various shades of gray. They can also see really well in the dark without any night vision glasses!

  14. Chubbers: Your pet’s health is no joke and is something that must be taken care of in the same way we take care of ourselves! Obesity is the top health problem among dogs and it leads to several illnesses like diabetes etc.

  15. Doggie Disco: The Beatles included a whistle that is only audible to dogs in the song "A Day in the Life.” In an interview in 2013, Paul McCartney said that he added a frequency only dogs can hear to the end of the Beatles song ‘A Day in the Life’. So the next time you wanna party at home with your dog, play this song and watch them groove with you!
