The cool breeze and the rains set the mood for a cheerful atmosphere around. While enjoying the splash of Monsoon, it’s necessary to ensure certain practices for your pet’s health and safety. Petsy is here to help you make your checklist along with some simple tips and tricks to ensure a hygienic, safe and cheerful Monsoon.
1. Deworm before Monsoon begins
A lot of monsoon related diseases can be caused due to parasites. Consult your vet if your pet is due for any regular deworming treatments. Make sure to not miss any of the vaccinations due to the downpour and keep a regular tab on his vaccination schedule.
2. Boiled water only
Even though you take extra care of your pet, it's necessary to practice extra caution during Monsoon to keep your pets away from water-borne diseases. Keep your pet hydrated with clean drinking water which is boiled and cooled.
3. Fibre up their diet
There may be times when you might not be able to step out with your pet for a walk. To avoid indigestion, include more fibre-rich food like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, apple, muskmelon and steamed beans in his diet. These will keep constipation at bay. At the same time, be mindful of not overdoing with these items as it may lead to bloating, gassy stomach, cramping etc. Adhere to a low calorie diet to avoid piling on kilos to compensate for less activity.
4. Keep 'em clean and dry
While enjoying the rain with your dog, use protective gear to keep their fur dry and boots to keep their paws clean. And as soon as you come home, wash them with lukewarm water or pet wipes to get rid of the germs and dirt.
5. Check their ears and coat often
Monsoon is also a happy season for pests, fleas and ticks. They often crawl in and take refuge on your dog's moist fur. Hence, investigate your dog often, comb their coat with a flea comb regularly and use a flea and tick shampoo to get rid of them. The increase in moisture also causes excess wax to form in their ears, regularly clean them with ear wipes and keep a check to avoid infections.
6. Create a secure and warm space
Even though you practice all the dos and don’ts by the book, the most important thing is to make them feel secure during a downpour if the thunder or flashes of lightning scare them. Let him snuggle with you, stuff his bed with his favourite toys so he can cuddle them to calm his anxiety and feel warm.
7. Indoor games
Keep your pet engaged and active indoors by playing games such as tug of war, treasure hunt with your pet’s favourite treats, using treat dispensing toys, hide and seek etc. These not just strengthen the bond between you and your pet but also improve mental stimulation and keep them engaged for hours.
