Grooming a Pet Rabbit

Even though rabbits spend a good amount of time grooming themselves, it's necessary for you to indulge in rabbit grooming every once in a while. They don't need baths but have to be brushed regularly to prevent hairballs and keep their coat shining, and their nails have to be trimmed to keep their feet healthy and prevent them from getting stuck in the carpeting.

Confused about how to clean a rabbit at home? Here are a few easy rabbit grooming tips for you.

  • Brushing their fur: To prevent hairballs and remove excess fur from their coat, it's necessary to gently brush their coat at least once a week. During excessive shedding periods, it's ideal to brush every day and you will notice a difference in the amount of hair you brush out every day. Rabbits groom themselves regularly but they will always have some hair in their system. What we can do is limit the fur intake by grooming them, keeping their fur clean and free from hairballs.

  • Cleaning a rabbit's ears: It's important to keep their ears free from debris or wax as it's formation may cause ear infection or inflammation which needs veterinary care. What you can do to keep it clean is wipe their outer ear with moist cotton balls gently to prevent this build-up from happening.

  • Rabbit hygiene: Making sure that the bottom part of your rabbit is clean and hygiene is a must. Check their bottom side regularly to clean any excess urine stains or droppings which may have remained on their underside. Keep their litter boxes or trays clean and available to them at all times to prevent them from sitting on their urine or droppings.

  • Trimming a rabbit's nails: Their nails need to be trimmed at least once a month. It's a great practice to check their nails every week when you brush their fur to trim it whenever they get long.

  • Controlling fleas and ticks: Even though bunnies stay indoors, they can get flea and tick infestation due to other pets or humans carrying these parasites. If a situation like this arises, please consult a veterinarian for medication to eradicate this problem. Bathing of rabbits or using any anti-flea and tick products on them is strongly discouraged. A vet will advise you regarding appropriate medication for your rabbit and use a flea comb to remove fleas as they die on the rabbit.

Besides, a few Petsy tips to keep in mind while grooming your furry rabbit:

  • Please remember that a rabbit's skin is sensitive and fragile. While brushing their fur, be gentle and use a rabbit hairbrush which is designed especially for them and avoid metal toothed slicker brushes as they may hurt their skin. a fine-toothed comb can be used as well.
  • Rabbits don't need baths and if you think they need one, do 'spot cleaning' on the area that is dirty with a damp (not wet) cloth to clean it. If a rabbit's fur is wet due to any reason, please remember that it takes a long time to dry and a blow dryer should be used with extreme caution. They are prone to overheating so use a warm or cool setting if you must use it.

Only a little time spent grooming your bunny goes a long way. A well-groomed bunny is a healthier and happier bunny.
