How to Care For Your New Pet Fish - Petsy

How to Care For Your New Pet Fish

It is always exciting to have a new pet. Be it common pets like dogs, cats, small animals or turtles, or fish. Fishes are truly fascinating and are fintastic pets! To see them navigate around the tank is always enjoyable. Watching them for even some time can lead to multiple health benefits like reduction in stress and blood pressure, relaxing and calming the mind, and reducing anxiety.

If one cannot handle the unending responsibilities of owning a dog or cat, fishes are indeed a great alternative that allows more people to have pets. They are low-maintenance pets and need very little care-just feed them, check the water chemistry, and make sure they're healthy.
Certainly are perfect for those who seek peace, live in limited spaces, or lead hectic lives! And if you are one of those who travel frequently, a pet fish is an ideal pet for you.

Things you will need:

  • A fish tank
  • Gravel
  • Plants
  • Filter
  • Fish food
  • Cleaning products
  • Net

Thorough research
Fish, like other animals, can adapt to different environments. The first step will require extensive research into the type of fish you intend to have.  The pH of the water ideal for the fish, the temperature, and the sort of food they eat are all essential points. Knowing the type of fish allows a pet owner to determine whether the fish can live with others or is happy alone. To avoid fish conflicts, more aggressive fish should be kept in their individual tanks.

Sufficient space
One of the most significant things to keep in mind is to provide your fish with sufficient space. It is always said, the bigger the fish tank space, the better it is. However, the size of the tank will depend on the type and the number of fish you decide to have as your pets.

Decorating the tank
A popular tendency among pet-fish owners is to decorate the tanks with lovely, eye-catching decor that often mirrors their home design. A lot of decor, imitation plants, and decorations are even seen in larger fish tanks. Keep in mind why you purchased a bigger tank in the first place. Your fish requires more room. Ensure that you don't stuff it with needless decorations. If you know your fish likes to burrow or hide in dark spots and corners, purchasing a few shaded plants or objects for them to swim over, under, or through can be beneficial.

NO NO to Overfeeding
Many pet parents make the mistake of overfeeding their pet fishes. if your fishes are leaving food floating, there are chances that you’re feeding too much. Another mistake is to feed your fish the same food every day. It must be ensured that too much food is not left to be wasted in the tank, which primarily results in overeating and a cluttered fish tank. Feeding your fish different kinds and types of food will provide them not only a varied diet but also the nutrients they need to be healthy.

Tank cleaning
Okay, this could be time-consuming but at the same time, it is also unavoidable. Health and hygiene should always be your top-most priority. For your fish to be healthy and happy, ensure you clean the tank every 2 weeks. Luckily, with regular cleaning, you won’t have to worry about emptying all the water at once.

Water temperature
Considering the size of the fish, one might be of the view that a glass bowl with water would work, but that’s not how it should be, never recommended. You need to fill your tank with gravel, add the filter and then add water. Appropriate time should be given for the beneficial bacteria to populate the gravel and the filter. If you are short on time, a tank starter might help, after which you can set your tank to maintain the proper temperature and pH for the species of fish that are in the tank and add appropriate lighting.

Monitoring them
Fishes are generally considered to be peaceful species, despite that, as good pet parents you must ensure there’s no bullying going on between the fishes as it is very likely to happen.
Keep an eye on your fish to make sure they're swimming around and looking healthy. They should be breathing normally rather than struggling for air. Examine their scales as well to ensure there is no spotting or flaking. If one of your fish appears to be sick, take it out and place it in a separate tank for observation.  Secondly, monitoring the fish for bacteria, fungal, and parasitic infections as well as lethargy, floating at the surface, and inability to stay upright are factors that should not be overlooked.

Placing the fish tank
As fish tanks can be fairly heavy, invest in a good-durable stand, and try not moving it around too much once it's in place. Place your tank out of direct sunlight to avoid algae growth. A more serene setting for your fish is often found in a quieter room. Remember to acquire a lid for your tank if you have other pets or if your fish jumps.

Segregation
When selecting which fish to keep in your tank, go beyond color and appearance and instead consider behavior. In general, you should not pair non-aggressive and aggressive fish together. When the different varieties of fish are mixed, the aggressive fish will usually attack the others.

Lastly, how would you know if your pet is happy and healthy? If your fish has a brilliant color, is swimming around, climbs to the surface to consume its food, and can be seen floating peacefully as it rests, it is absolutely happy and healthy! Your fish will feel more at ease, contented, and at home than ever if you remember to treat their house the same way you would treat your own!
