Pet Rabbit Care Guide

Rabbits are unique pets and they can very easily pave their own path into your heart with their adorable faces. In Petsy’s own rabbit care guide, here are all of the things you need to know on how to take care of a pet rabbit.

Diet
Rabbits are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. They’re built for a diet consisting of mainly large amounts of grass and leaves, as well as some flowers and fruits. Hay e.g. Timothy hay is the most important part of a rabbit’s diet. Grass Hay is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and promotes good dental care. Vegetables should make up a large portion of your rabbit's diet to ensure a balanced diet.

Choosing a Rabbit Cage
Deciding whether to get a hutch or cage for your pet bunnies at home is extremely important. Cages that are spacious, easy to clean and easy for your rabbit to get in and out of, will make caring for rabbits a breeze.

Rabbit Litter Box
Rabbits have a natural inclination to poop and pee in one area. By providing a shallow litter box in the corner of the cage. Do not use clay/clumping cat litter or wood shavings, as they are not safe for rabbits. Rabbits like to eat hay and poop at the same time, so this will encourage good litter box habits.

Toys for Rabbits
Rabbits are playful, active and curious little creatures. They need a good variety of toys to keep them occupied and also are important to ensure good mental health. You can even DIY toys for your little one. It's a perfect opportunity for you to bond with your bunny too!

Grooming your rabbit
Rabbits spend a good deal of time grooming themselves but that doesn't mean we don't have to lend a helping hand once in a while. Do note, rabbits do not need baths and generally find them very stressful. It’s always better to do “spot cleaning” of the dirty area rather than giving your rabbit a bath.

Rabbit Health
Your rabbit's veterinarian will play a large role in keeping your bunny healthy. Spaying or neutering, proper diet, exercise and enrichment, and regular check-ups are all essential in keeping your bunny healthy and happy.
