Should I Feed My Dog Eggs - Petsy

Should I Feed My Dog Eggs

Question of the day - Should I feed my dog eggs?

The simple answer is yes - eggs are a great source of protein. Aside from being rich in protein, eggs are also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B and B12 and Iron.

How should I serve the eggs?

You can serve your dog eggs raw or cooked. Serving raw eggs is a good idea when you have a trusted source to avoid risks of infections such as salmonella. Alternatively, you can lightly cook the eggs in some olive oil and serve with the yolk slightly runny.

How much and how often?

When considering how often and how much to feed your dog eggs, always consult your vet first. Egg whites contain a protein known as avidin that combines with biotin preventing its absorption. Biotin is a vitamin that is essential for cell growth, metabolism, and healthy skin. Long term exposure to avidin can cause a biotin deficiency. Cooking the eggs can help prevent the risk of this deficiency.

Keeping this in mind, it is not recommended to rely on eggs as the standalone source of protein in your dog’s diet.

The amount of eggs will depend on your dog and whether they have any other health conditions. As a general guideline, approximately 2 eggs per week for smaller dogs and 5-7 eggs a week for medium to large breeds.
