Transitioning Your Pet’s Food - Petsy

Transitioning Your Pet’s Food

If you’ve decided to make a change to your dog’s diet, whether it’s a different brand or a new balance between wet and dry food, you must do so slowly. Some pets will find it easy to get used to the change, while others might take time. When you are transitioning the food, it is necessary to make sure that your pet will get the proper nutrition that's needed.

Dogs and cats have sensitive stomachs so, if you suddenly change what you’re feeding them, this can cause them to experience stomach upsets. When big changes occur to your pet's food plan, the good bacteria need time to evolve. If you try to alternate too rapidly, the bacteria can’t alter fast, that may cause health problems like diarrhoea. This switch may be difficult for your pet’s intestine too since ingesting food you’re not used to can lead to different digestive problems. Transitioning your pet’s food slowly is essential to give the microorganisms in your pet’s intestine a chance to adjust to the food plan. And your pet can be fussy about the taste, texture or personal preferences when offered with a new food type.

We recommend that you switch the diet gradually over a few days, by mixing the new food with their existing food over a

A schedule that you could follow:

Timeline Food Ratio
0-2 Days 75% old food + 25% new food
3-4 days 50% old food + 50% new food
4-6 days 25% old food + 75% new food
7-9 days 100% new food

One of the most important things to keep in mind while switching their diets is that they get adequate nutrition at all times and, it’s not recommended to make this change very often as it can affect your pet’s health.
